Ikai is a first-person psychological horror game set in a feudal Japan steeped in poverty. The story revolves around the spirits of the past and the present of Naoko, the priestess of a shrine. She woke up within the unholy walls of the formerly sacred place, almost dead, almost alive. Countless yokais were wandering around, too close to humans, too close to Gods. The thin limit between the world and the underworld had broken.
Ikai originated from a clear interest towards Japanese culture amongst the members of the team. The theme came almost naturally, however, the approach to be taken in order to treat this culture was uncertain at first. Several options were envisaged regarding the genre of Ikai. Ikai as a psychological horror game was conceived after the certainty of it being the best chance for the team to show its full potential.
- Experience the horror of old superstitions by the hand of Yokais (Japanese folklore’s monsters, ghosts and spirits)
- Explore a haunted medieval shrine
- Stay calm under pressure to write protective seals with brush and ink
- Be silent, do not disturb the evil
